“Um, Abeni? About your mother’s wedding chain… No, that’s not it. Too blunt. Oh, by the way big guy… You remember that choice piece of bling you had stashed in your giant man-purse? Funny story about that…”

It was an hour or so later and Tayna still hadn’t figured out how she was going to explain the bizarre theft, nor her complete failure to stop it. She was still searching for the right angle when Abeni suddenly barged out of the trees.

“The Little Fish is here!” he cried, and threw his arms open wide in greeting. “Abeni is happy to see her!” Then he stopped short and looked around, taking in the utter silence with a broad glance. “Why did she not go with her people to visit the King?”

Tayna glanced down at the leather bag, still lying open on the ground beside her, and then back up at the big, trusting Djin face. She sucked in a deep breath and stood up. Like band-aids, right? She gave her bracelet wrist a quick jerk. Better to just get it over with.

“Look, Abeni, I came here to ask if you would take me with you on this wagon ride deal or whatever, because Lan’ia Sha told me you were heading to Gnomelandia or whatever they call it and I need to get to Igli’s Book to look up my parents, who are kind of missing, but I don’t know how to get there, so I was going to ask you to drop me off on your way by, only you weren’t here, so I sat down to wait for you and then—Bam! —this little ninja squirrel appears out of, like, freaking nowhere, and before I know it, he’s got your family fortune in his furry little mitts and he’s running for the hills going grunt, squeak, wheeze, and I am so totally going after him, you know, ‘cuz what’s a friend supposed to do, right, but he starts yelling these squeaky little nursery rhymes at me and before I can figure out what his damage smells like—Poof!—there he was, gone, so now here’s me, worried you’ll think I took it, but I didn’t, only how could that matter, because I had the chance to stop him and I blew it, so it really is all my fault anyway and, like, now you’re gonna refuse to even talk to me, let alone take me to the Book placey place, and that’s okay, I mean, I totally understand, but I don’t know what I’m gonna do, either, because I pretty much don’t know anybody else around here, except for that creepy Veest guy and we all know how reliable he turned out to be, so I’ll probably just wander the forest blindly and do babysitting for table scraps until someone finally feels sorry enough to put me out of my misery, but if Grimorl really is Hell, then we all know that that’s going to wind up all nuns, all the time, multiplied by, like, a bajillion, but that’s my problem not yours.
